Asolo and roundabouts: art and nature
In the kingdom of the Ciprus Queen, arm in arm with Canova and Palladio. Asolo, the most British town in Veneto, admired by Robert Browning and Eleonora Duse.
Magic hills and timeless landscapes. Asolo is the pearl of the Trevigian March: a small village in the extreme north of Treviso province almost at the border line with Vincenza. A compulsory stage for lovers of art and literature from all over the world.
Palladio, Canova, Eleonora Duse, Robert Browning, Henry James, Hernst Hemingway, Marius De Maria and the British painter and explorer Freya Stark: just a few names of the artists who have been infected by the beauty and calm of this nice village. It counts 6.000 ihabitants and it can be reached turning right on the main road from Montebelluna to Bassano del Grappa.

Symbol monument of Asolo is the huge Medieval citadel overlooking the village from the top of Monte Ricco (Rich Mountain). Already lived in the VI century B.C., the citadel was probably only built about the XII century and was fortified by Wercio Tempesta. It mantained its martial importance until 1510, year of the last battle in which it was involved, then it was used for different pourposes (such as a lazaret).In the village centre a bakery cooks bread in a XV century bake, the most ancient in Italy; and it's possible to visit the "Tessoria asolana", where delicate silks have been weaved always in the same way since '800.

In the roundabouts of Asolo, along the road to Castelfranco Veneto, is worth a stage in San Vito di Altivole where we can see the beautiful building called Barco della Regina Cornaro, country residence of Ciprus Queen, built by Pietro Lugato in 1490. Another extraordinary monument raises beside the village cemetery, work of one of the most genial contemporary Italian architets: Carlo Scarpa (1906 - 1978). We are talking about the monumental grave of the Brion family (build between 1970 and 1975) who gave the Venetian architect a great disposal in space, money and above all inventiveness. In a corner of the grave a small tombstone says that Scarpa-self wanted to be graved here, with his most loved work of art, in a lot of ancient taste and a little bit of modern shiver.
