Tusco-Emilian Appennines: snow and enchanted mounts
An itinerary through Modena lowlands, through the green hills of Frignano and the snowed declivities of Cimone Mount. To go skiing in Sestola, elective homeland of Alberto Tomba, or going for an excursion in the Medieval villages and through the marvellous views of the Modenese Appennines.
To go skiing one hour far from Modena in a spectacular untouched nature that frames the Appennines, the mountains chain of central Italy that is no way inferior to the more popular Alps. An itinerary in the green of Frignano and the white of Cimone Mount, 2.165 meters, highest peak of the Northern Appennines. Rich not only in its eviromental characteristics but also in art and culture, and in the Sestola area, where grew the talent of Alberto Tomba, of sport and leisures.

Main city of Frignano is Pavullo, 13.000 inhabitants, 686 meters high, plunged in chestnut-trees, oaks and firs. It was settlement of Ligurians, before it was won by the Romans, who created above the present built-up area a "Castrum Feronianum", that is to say a military settlement.In the Middle Age Pavullo was an important market centre and then Summer residence of Francesco IV d'Este, who let the Ducal Palace (now seat of cultural services and of the Gallery for Contemporary Arts) be built in 1832. Its marvellous park, surrounded by wide chestnuts and beeches, contains arboreal treasures such as a 30 meters high Lebanese cedar, said "Pinone".

Five kilometers far we reach Sestola, important tourist destination since after World War II when the first ski equipments were built: 50 kilometers of ski slopes for any difficulty degree and 26 lifts betweet Pian del Falco and Passo del Lupo at the slopes of Cimone Mount. It is worth visiting the beautiful castle now hosting the Museum of Mountain Civilization, where you may see ancient shops rebuilt and typical objects used in the mountains. Particularly curious the collection of skis, bob-sleights and sleights.Another 5 kilometers and we are in Fanano, small village founded in 450 A.C. by some Florentines who had escaped the Goth invasion. It is well known for the benedictine monastery in Abà and the natural environment is varied and interesting: here you can see the very rare carnivorous plant Drosera Rotundifoglia as well as the royal eagle.
On the border line with Tuscany we reach Fiumalbo, the village of Frignano who better preserved its historical centre and its traditions.
