Parma: from the Dukedom treasures to Verdi memories
A trip on the waves of memory. From the aristocratic magnificence of Parma Dukedom, a town rich of traditions connected to the works of art by Correggio and Antelami, through its low lands described by Giovannino Guareschi, to Busseto, land of the great composer Giuseppe Verdi. And further the pleasure of discovering dainty gastronomic products as "parmigiano-reggiano", Parma ham and the "culatello" of Zibello.
Great music and dainty dishes. These are the main attractions of one of the most sweet and calm Italian provinces: Parma. In the heart of Emilia, plain lands between the Appennins and the Po, through the memories of the composer Giuseppe Verdi (born in Busseto) and of the writer Guareschi, to end in the thermal resort Salsomaggiore.

Parma is mostly known for the artists that were born or just lived and worked there: Benedetto Antelami, Salimbene, Correggio, Parmigianino, Bodoni, Verdi, Toscanini and Stendhal. It resembles no other Italian town: still today it boasts a rich cultural life thanks to the University and to other centres such as Regio theatre.Duomo square is calm, out-of-the-way and preserves its Medieval taste. It hosts a beautiful complex of monuments formed by the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the XI century Episcopal Palace with a large court and a typical Renaissance mark. The Cathedral is called after S. Maria Assunta and is first named in a document of 1092. It was built on the area previously occupied by a paleochristian basilica and boasts a beautiful Gothic bell tower rising over the roofs. The inside has an imposing nave and contains many works by great masters, among them the XII century sculptures by Benedetto Antelami and Correggio's fresco portraing the "Virgin's Assumption" (1526-1530). Beside it we see the octagonal Baptistery, embellished both inside and outside with sculptures and reliefs by Antelami.

Close to the Cathedral there is the curious spices shop of S. Giovanni Evangelista, Benedictine pharmacy operating between 1201 and 1766. Not far you may see Garibaldi Square the most animated centre of the town. On its Western side lays the XIII century Governor's Palace, opposite to it there are the City Hall and the Palace of People's Captain.
