Val Rendena: snow, churches and nature

Val Rendena lays in the Western Trentino and is one of the most fashinating of Dolomites with its holiday resorts, such as Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio, and the small villages surrounded by farms and "malghe". Villa Rendena has a typical past of shepards and its landscape is dotted with huts and "malghe" above all along the S. Valentino valley with the cascades formed by Rio Bedù. Going on we meet Darè, Iavrè and Vigo Rendena (its name, derived from the word "vicus" - village -, prooves that it was founded about the IV century B.C. with the first settlements in the valley). Their history is marked by continuous unions and separtions and although nowadays Vigo and Darè are administratively independent from each other they still share the church and the cimetery.

Settled at 1550 meters in the wonderful valley between the Brenta group and the Adamello and Presanella glaciers, appears Madonna di Campiglio. Pearl of the Rendana Valley it was turistically promoted by Giambattista Righi di Strembo who bought the ancient Santa Maria monastry in 1868 building at its place the first hotel, the Alpine Establishment, where the first tourist were hosted. He made Madonna di Campiglio a refined holiday resort for Austrian and Mitteleuropean nobles and middle-class people.

For ski fans Madonna di Campiglio means 3-Three one of the main contests of the Ski World Cup, thought by Rolly Marchi in 1948. But it also offers 90 kilometers of ski slopes (150 km with Folgarida and Marilleva), cable cars, chair-lifts but also the possibility to practice all queerest moutain sports: 30 km. of "langlauf" ski slopes in Campo Carlo Magno, beautiful itineraries for Alpine and hiking ski going up to Cima Roma through Val Gelada and also sleddog facilities (excurions on sleights pulled by husky dogs). In Pinzolo you can ride also in winter on simple pace or trotting on the snow. More daring people may also climb on the iced cascades of Nambrone, Vallesinella and Nardis or spend the night in an igloo in Ritorto after having reached it walking with rackets or skiing.
